Michael T. Jones, ’63
Michael Tyler (Mickey) Jones, 68, of Bowman, died Friday, November 27,
at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, SC. Funeral Services will
be held Monday, November 30, at 2:00 p.m., at Wightman United Methodist
Church in Bowman, with the Rev. Robbie Hall officiating. Burial will
follow in the Bowman Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Moreau, Leonard
West, Jim Biggers, Andy Stroman, Warren Stroman, David Truell, Tyler and
Brent Arant. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of the Mabry Cancer
Center in Orangeburg, SC. Greeters will be Sylvester King, Kenneth S.
Ott and Fabian Bonasera. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 29th,
6-8 p.m. at Wightman United Methodist Church, Bowman, SC. Michael Jones
was born May 10, 1941, in Bowman, SC, the son of the late John Monroe
and Sarah McPherson Jones. He is preceded in death by a brother, John
Lynwood Jones. He is a 1963 graduate of The Citadel. Upon graduation, he
was commissioned into the United States Air Force as an officer, where
he volunteered and served in Vietnam. While there he received the Air
Force Commendation Medal. After serving seven years in the Air Force as
a Captain, he returned to civilian life. In 1970, Michael started his
career in Atlanta, Georgia. After exceeding 34 years with The Southern
Company, he retired and moved back to his hometown. He was a volunteer
for the Mabry Cancer Center, where he was known as “Mr. Mike” and logged
1000+ hours. He treasured the hours spent volunteering at the Cancer
Center, where the staff became a part of his family. He was an active
member of Wightman United Methodist Church. Surviving are his loving
wife of 46 years, Margaret Benge Jones of the home; a son Michael John
Jones (Kirsten) of St. George, S.C.; a daughter Patricia Jones Dunn
(Josh) of Sugar Hill, Georgia; two granddaughters, Chloe Elizabeth Dunn
and Charlotte Louise Jones (the joys of his life); one sister, Patsy
Jones Kirven, of Bowman. The Family would like to give special thanks to
Dr. Chris Y. Brunson, Dr. Hugh G. Merriman, III and the staff (“The
Girls”) of the Mabry Cancer Center. Also, Dr. Frank C. Coulter, Dr.
Alvin L. Reaves, III, Dr. Samuel V. King, Dr. Vann Beth M. Shuler and
the special nurses of 4 West at TRMC. The family suggests memorials be
made to the Mabry Cancer Center in Orangeburg, SC 29118; or Wightman
