Death of James W. Powers, ’58
James (Jimmy) Weldon Powers, of Walterboro, husband of Carolyn Carter
Powers, died Friday morning at his residence in Walterboro. He was 73.
Mr. Powers was born in Charleston March 28, 1936, a son of the late
Weldon Augustus Powers and Ruby Jones Powers. He was a 1954 graduate of
Rivers High School, and attended The Citadel from 1954-1957. “Jimmy” was
a veteran of the United States Army, and was a former sports writer for
the News and Courier. His love of athletics eventually lead him to
Walterboro to become the Sports Editor for the Press and Standard. Mr.
Powers was also the Executive Athletic Director of the South Carolina
Independent School Association, and was an insurance agent for Southland
Life Insurance Company, which later became Life of Georgia. Mr. Powers
was also a Methodist Minister. He formerly served the Smoaks Charge of
Colleton County, and was also a former minister of Main Street United
Methodist Church in Bamberg. He was a 2002 graduate of the Emory
University Candler School of Theology. “Jimmy” was a Lay Leader to the
S.C. Methodist Conference, and was also a member of its Insurance
Committee. An active member of Bethel United Methodist in Walterboro, he
was on the finance committee, was a choir member, a Sunday school
teacher, a lay speaker, and a hospital chaplain. Mr. Powers was also an
active member of his community. He was instrumental in the early
establishment of the Rice Festival in Walterboro, and was a volunteer
fireman. He was member of the Colleton County Football Hall of Fame
Committee and the Walterboro Tree Protection Committee. For many years,
“Jimmy” volunteered as a Fundraiser for the Medical University of South
Carolina Children’s Hospital and was also a member of the Walterboro
Elks Lodge #1988. However, he will be remembered most by his family and
friends as a truly loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition
to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Kugley
Powers Williams, and her husband Albert “Bubba” W. Williams Jr., of
Charleston. There are two grandchildren, Lindsey Faye Williams and
Lauren Elizabeth Williams, of Charleston, a brother, Paul Kenneth
Powers, of York, PA, and a sister, Andrea Powers Jones, of Mt. Pleasant.
“Jimmy” was preceded in death in 1987 by a daughter, Deborah “Debbie”
Faye Powers. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 in
the Bethel United Methodist Church, with burial following in the Live
Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6-8
p.m., at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be
made to either Bethel United Methodist Church or to Hospice Care of
