Mitchell Garth Florence On August 12, 2009, Mitchell Garth Florence died
as a result of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
Born in Miami, Florida, Mitchell was the only son of Evelyn Garth and
Robert Spurgeon Florence. He graduated second in his class at the
Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, in 1952. Subsequently,
he obtained a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the
University of California at Berkeley. While serving as an officer in the
United States Air Force, he felt a call to become a minister. After
completing his military service, he entered Perkins School of Theology
at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Upon receiving his
divinity degree he served for many years as pastor to numerous Methodist
churches in Florida. In his retirement years Mr. Florence made his home
in Bradenton, Florida, where he became a beloved and faithful member of
Braden River United Methodist Church, where a memorial service will be
held on Saturday, August 22nd, at 1:30 p.m. (5858 44th Ave. E.). In lieu
of flowers, the family requests that do-nations be made to BRUMC or the
Muscular Dystrophy Association.
