James P. Blalock, Jr. ’49

James Philip Blalock, Jr., 83, of Charleston, died on Tuesday, August
18, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, SC. Mr. Blalock was
born on November 22, 1925, in Charleston, a son of James Philip and
Bertha Coward Blalock. He graduated from Charleston High School in 1942
and attended the College of Charleston before serving in the U.S. Marine
Corps from 1944 to 1946. Philip graduated from the Citadel in 1949. He
worked for GMAC until 1953 when he began his career with Westvaco.
Philip was the head of the Kraft division at the time of his retirement
in 1987. Mr. Blalock is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elaine Speigle
Blalock, his son, Philip Lance Blalock and his wife, Jodie; two
grandchildren, Elizabeth B. Fletcher of Greenville and P. Ryan Blalock
of Charlotte; a great-grandchild, Allene B. Fletcher and a brother,
William M. Blalock of Charleston. The relatives and friends of Mr. and
Mrs. James Philip Blalock, Jr. are invited to attend his Memorial
Service at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2009, at John Wesley United
Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church,
Saturday morning, from 10:30 a.m., until time of service. A private
graveside service will take place Friday at Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
