Roland A. Loveless, Jr., ’50
Roland Andrew Loveless, 81, passed away on March 27, 2009. A native of
Washington, D.C., Roland received his bachelor’s degree from The
Citadel, his master’s degree from Boston University and did graduate
work at the University of Notre Dame. He pursued a career in economic
development at state, regional and local levels, which included heading
state programs in Vermont and Kansas. From 1945 to 1946, Roland served
in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1989 he and his wife, Irene, retired to St.
Augustine. Mr. Loveless was a devoted member of the Catholic church,
actively involved in the Knights of Columbus in Baltimore and local
Council 611. As a fourth-degree knight, he served as financial
secretary, a trustee and a member of the Council’s First Degree team. He
also served as a Eucharistic minister to Ponce Care Center residents and
lector at Cathedral Parish. Roland’s avocation was acting. While in
period dress, he made history come alive to thousands of people as an
impersonator of both Henry Flagler and Teddy Roosevelt. He worked
professionally as an actor and was involved with Elderhostel programs
sponsored by Eckerd College and Georgia Southwestern State University.
Mr. Loveless is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irene; three children,
Garrett, Heather and Keith; and two grandsons, Brian and Brandon.
A memorial Mass will be held in Roland’s honor at Cathedral Basilica. A
Memorial Mass and celebration of life for Roland Andrew Loveless, will
be held 7 p.m. April 15, 2009, at the Cathedral Basilica of St.
