G. Marion Reid III, ’51
George Marion Reid, III, husband of Annie Caroline Butt Reid, of
Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of July 22,
2009. His funeral services will be held in St. Philip’s Episcopal Church
Saturday, July 25, 2009 at ten o’clock. A reception will follow the
service in the Church Parish Hall with interment afterwards in Magnolia
Cemetery. Marion was born in Charleston, SC, May 10, 1926, a son of
George Marion Reid and Henrietta Elisabeth Stevens Reid. He graduated
from Miss Watts’ School, Craft School and the High School of Charleston.
At age 17 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in Italy during
World War II. After the War he attended The Citadel and flew private
airplanes. In 1952, Mr. Reid was appointed Director of the Charleston
Municipal Airport where he served for thirty years, overseeing many
changes in the field of aviation. He worked to protect forgotten
historical places owned by the airport such as the Andre Michaux Garden
site and Fort Trenholm. All of his life he loved sailing and competed in
regattas and ocean racing. In his retirement, he established Stono River
Stable. On this farm, he created Blacklock Nature Preserve, where he
worked until his death, using his knowledge of lowcountry plants and
wildlife to create and protect the natural habitat. He was a past
president of the Southeastern Airport Managers Association, a member of
The Society of the Cincinnati, the General Society of Colonial Wars, the
Carolina Yacht Club, and the South Carolina Thoroughbred Owners and
Breeders Association. He was a life-long member of St. Philips Episcopal
Church. He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Annie Caroline Butt
Reid of Johns Island, SC; three daughters: Dr. Elisabeth Reid Gelber
(Peter) of Montezuma, GA, Mrs. Jennifer Reid Walt of Waynesville, NC,
and Miss Rachel Stanyarne Reid of Charleston, SC: one son: George Marion
Reid, IV of Charleston, SC; one brother: William Stevens Reid, one
nephew: William Stevens Reid, Jr.; and two grandchildren: Elisabeth Walt
and Margaret Gelber. Memorials may be made to St. Philip’s Episcopal
