Citadel Alumni Obituaries

Herbert F. Stackhouse of Pensacola, Florida, died on May 11, 2009. He
was born on December 16, 1921, in Dillon, South Carolina. He attended
The Citadel, where he was a Southern Conference Boxing Champion, and
graduated in 1942. He received his U.S. Army commission as a 2nd
Lieutenant in January 1943, and he served for the duration of the Second
World War. He was married to Harriet Britton of Kingstree, South
Carolina, in 1943, and they were happily married for 56 years until her
death in 1999. Known as “”Hub”", Mr. Stackhouse participated in the
D-Day invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944, landing on Utah Beach. He was
a tank commander in the 746th Tank Battalion, and he saw considerable
action in the liberation of France and the Battle of the Bulge. He
received a Bronze Star for valor for service at Remagen. When he left
the Army in October 1945 at age 23 with the rank of Captain, he was a
company commander. Mr. Stackhouse managed ice businesses for over 50
years. He owned and operated Peoples Crystal Ice Company in Pensacola
and Panama City from 1971 until his retirement. Hub is survived by his
four children, Herb (Cathy) Stackhouse of Washington, Georgia. Julie
(Eric) Eggen, of Pensacola, Hank (Michaela) Stackhouse of Pensacola, and
Mary Ann (Taleb) Al-Majed of Young Harris, Georgia. He is also survived
by eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and close friends
Billie Pat Decker, Don Burrill and Bob Oliff. Mr. Stackhouse was a
member of Warrington United Methodist Church. A Visitation will be held
from 2:00pm in the church fellowship hall, until the Memorial Service at
3:00pm at Warrington United Methodist Church on Friday, May 15, 2009.
Rev. Robert Bailey will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make
donations to the Harriet Britton Stackhouse Scholarship at Coker
College, 300 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550, or to the Gulf Coast
Wings of Hope support organization for families of children with cancer,
