Citadel Alumni Obituaries

Thomas Ashton Gandy, Jr., age, 93, died on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Pee
Dee Gardens Assisted Living in Florence. Son of Thomas Ashton Gandy and Mary
Sompayrac Gandy. Graduate of St. David’s Academy, The Citadel, and the
University of Virginia at Charlottesville. Served with U.S. Army-World Warr,
II, Korea, and in various posts around the world. Retired as Lt. Colonel.
Taught science in high schools in S.C. and N.C. Lifelong hobbies-local
history and equestrian sports. Member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church, The
Citadel Alumni Association, Retired Officers Association, and the Darlington
County Historical Society. Mr. Gandy is survived by his sisters: Virginia
Van Nest, of Tucson, Arizona; Vivian Root, Rutland, Mass.; Madge Wise of
Blackville, SC; and Emma Carol Hunsucker, Weaverville, NC and a number of
nieces and nephews; and his brother-in-law, WP Henley, Sr. of Darlington.
Distance, age, and infirmities of siblings make assembly of family for a
funeral an undue hardship. Kistler Hardee Funeral Home, Darlington, SC is in
charge. A private burial will held at a later date.
