Samuel Elvis Hanvey, 94, of Brevard, North Carolina, formerly of Charleston,
South Carolina and the widower of Harriette O’Neill Hanvey, entered into
eternal rest Thursday, January 17, 2013. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
held at 11:00 am Thursday, January 24, 2013 in the Stella Maris Catholic
Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivans Island. Rite of committal will be
private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Samuel was
born October 23, 1918 in Greenville, South Carolina, son of William D.
Hanvey and Eugenia Cole Hanvey. He was a graduate of The Citadel. Samuel was
a retired Major from the United States Army where he served in World War II.
He was the owner of Heyward & O’Neill General Agency. He served as the past
President of the Charleston Board of Insurance of Underwriters, the
Executive Board of SC Association of Insurance Agents, was chairman of the
Casualty Committee of the S.C.A I.A, Co-Chairman of Southern Agents
Conference covering 13 states, and a member of the Casualty Committee of
National Association of Insurance Agents. Mr. Hanvey’s community service and
recognitions include: Coastal Boys Council serving as Board Executive from
1968 to 1998, Vice President from 1968 to 1973 and President from 1973 to
1975; Boy Scouts of America where he attained Eagle Scout with palms,
Scouter’s Key, Scouter’s Training Award, Distinguished Eagle as an adult,
Silver Beaver, St. George Award, James E. West Fellow, 1910 Society-Daniel
Carter Board Member, on the Council Executive Board, Council Commissioner,
Council Vice President, and Member of the National Council. The Chapel at
Camp Ho Non Wah was built and dedicated to the perpetual memory of Mr.
Hanvey. In addition to his service through the Boy Scouts of America, Mr.
Hanvey was a volunteer at St. Francis Xavier Hospital for over 36 years. At
St. Francis he served on the building committee from 1967 to 1968, as a
board member from 1968 to 1988, served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees
from 1975 to 1988 and was Chairman of the Fiscal Management Committee. He
was a member of Exchange Club International where he was presented the
prestigious “Book of Golden Deeds” by the Metropolitan Charleston Club in
1975, and the American Red Cross where he served as Vice President and Board
Member. He was a Board Member of United Community Service Planning and
Charleston Development. Mr. Hanvey was a member and committees chairman of
the Charleston Chamber of Commerce (Trident). He was also a member of the
South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA. He served The Citadel by
being a member of the Century Club, Bulldog Club, Vice President of The
Brigadier Club from 1973 to 1978, Captains Table and Palmetto Classic. He
was the Past Director and Secretary of the National Office Management
Association. Mr. Hanvey was on the Committee on Health Study Charleston
County as chairman in 1964. In 1976, he was on the board of directors for
the Low Area Systems for Health (LASH). He was a member of Kiwanis
International-Charleston, SC Club where he had perfect attendance for 27
years, was the chairman of various committees, the Director, Vice President
and President in 1961, and received the Hexaom Award. As a member of Kiwanis
International- Carolinas District, Mr. Hanvey was the Chairman of the
Education Committee, Chairman of the Circle K Committee, division Chairman
of the Key Club Committee, attended 12 district conventions, and Lieutenant
Governor of Division 10. As a member of Kiwanis International he was Zone 2
(13 states) Chairman of Membership Development, gave address to
International Convention on Membership Development and attended 3
international conventions. Through Key Club he was a Sponsor of Bishop
England Club, attended 10 District Conventions, was Division 10 Chairman
from 1957 to 1960, formed new clubs at St. Andrews and Porter Military
Academy, and was awarded the Distinguished Service award in 1965. Mr. Hanvey
was a member of Circle K International where he served as Club Committee
Chairman and District Committee Chairman from 1962 to 1964, was the
co-founder of Carolinas District on Circle K, responsible for chartering 18
new clubs in South and North Carolina, attended 5 International Conventions,
and was awarded the Outstanding Service Award. Mr. Hanvey is survived by his
daughter, Janice H. Baughman and her husband, Dan of Etowah, NC; a
granddaughter, Harriette Gentry Bible and her husband, Jason of Savannah,
GA; a great grandson, Jack Laylon Bible of Savannah, GA; and by several
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Philip O’Neill Hanvey for
whom the family established the Philip O. Hanvey Memorial Trophy that is
continually won by sailors at the Carolina Yacht Club and has been awarded
for more than 50 years. Memorials may be made to The National Boy Scouts of
