Robert D. Cox III, ’63
Dr. Robert D. Cox, III, age 71, of Anderson, entered his Heavenly home upon
his death on January 10, 2013, at the Rainey Hospice House. He was
surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Norfolk, VA, he was the son of
the late Cpt. Robert D. Cox, Jr. and the late Kathryn Garnett Cox. For 46
years, he was the loving and devoted husband of Rebecca Merritt Cox of the
residence. Dr. Cox was a graduate of Jenkintown High School, Jenkintown,
PA, and of The Citadel, Class of 1963. He was a graduate of Medical
University of South Carolina, Class of 1967. Dr. Cox served his internship
at Chatham County Medical Center in Savannah, GA, and did further training
at John B. Umstead Psychiatric Hospital, Butner, NC, and Duke University,
Durham, NC. He was a medical doctor with a specialty in psychiatry. His
practice took him to work at Broughton Hospital, Morganton, NC; Patrick B.
Harris Psychiatric Hospital, Anderson, SC; G. Weber Bryan Psychiatric
Hospital, Columbia, SC; and Affiliated Counseling and Psychotherapy in
Gaffney, SC. Dr. Cox also worked with Perry Correctional in Pelzer, SC. Dr.
Cox proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Viet Nam Era where
he was an officer and a surgeon. Dr. and Mrs. Cox attended Boulevard Baptist
Church. In addition to his wife, Rebecca, Dr. Cox is survived by 2
daughters: Merritt C. Balding and her husband, Anthony, of Rock Hill, SC,
Kimberly C. Burkett and husband Michael, of Lexington, SC; 2 brothers:
Mariner G. Cox and wife, Donna, of Stafford, VA, Donald H. Cox and wife,
Shannon, of Tampa, FL; 1 sister, Kathryn C. West and husband, Mike, of Wise,
VA; 4 grandchildren: Kathryn Elizabeth and Michael Garrett Burkett of
Lexington, SC, and Rebecca Anne and Andrew Harrison Balding of Rock Hill,
SC; several nieces and nephews also survive. The Memorial Service to honor
and celebrate the life of Dr. Robert Cox will be held on Tuesday, January
15, 2013, at 11 AM at the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home, with Rev.
Dr. Johnny McKinney officiating. The committal will follow at M. J. ³Dolly²
Cooper Veteranıs Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive
friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until 10:30
AM. The family of Dr. Cox wishes to thank the doctors of AnMed Health and
