Dr. Charles Benjamin Hanna, 92, husband of the late Lena Mae Bryant Hanna of
68 years, died on Friday, January 11, 2013 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice
Home. Dr. Hanna was born in Enoree, SC on December 16, 1920 to the late Dr.
Charles David and Ora Waldrep Hanna. He faithfully served his country in the
United States Army Medical Corps. Charles earned his Bachelors of Science
degree from The Citadel in 1941 and received his M.D. degree from the
Medical University of South Carolina in 1944 where he also completed his
Medical Internship. He completed his Fellowship with the American College of
Surgeons in 1953 and received his certification with the American Board of
Surgery in 1958. Dr. Hanna practiced in the area of General Surgery,
Thoracic Surgery, and Oncological Surgery from 1952 until his retirement in
1990. He was also appointed Professor of Surgery at the Medical University
of South Carolina. In March of 1997, Dr. Hanna was honored with the Hanna
Laboratory for Retinal Research at the Medical University of South Carolina,
and was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor David Beasley, State
of South Carolina. He was a past member of Alpha Omega Alpha Fraternity, a
past member, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the
Medical University of South Carolina and board member Emeritus appointed for
life, a past member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Drug
Science Foundation, past member of the Board of Visitors of Columbia
College, past member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Trinity United
Methodist Church, Spartanburg, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the
Spartanburg Mental Health Association. He was also a member of Enoree Lodge
222. Charles is survived by his two sons, Dr. Charles Benjamin Hanna, Jr.
and his wife, Leah, of Spartanburg, and Dr. Richard Tinsley Hanna and his
wife, Holly, of Simpsonville; one daughter, Rebecca Hanna Jones and her
husband, Norman Fant Jones, Jr., of Mount Pleasant; a brother in-law, Dr.
Furnie Smith Bryant and his wife, Rosa; ten grandchildren, Jennifer Hanna
Ammons and her husband, Damon, of Spartanburg, Charles Benjamin Hanna III
and his wife, Jill, of Boiling Springs, Dr. Emily Hanna Crane and her
husband, Barrett, of Clarksville, TN, Michael Phillip Hanna and his wife,
Melissa, of Greer, Dr. Mary Hanna-Weir and her husband, Scot, of Washington,
DC, Patrick McKenzie Hanna and his wife, Lauren, of Durham, NC, Norman Fant
Jones III and Cadie of James Island, and Hanna-Betsill Jones of Mount
Pleasant. Also step granddaughters, Dr. Sarah Fiorentino Roush and her
husband, Seth, of LaVerne, TN, and Suzanne Fiorentino of Athens, GA; and
Great grands include, Coleman Harrelson Ammons, William Tinsley Ammons,
Arabella Sophia Hanna, Benjamin Hillen Hanna, Kathryn Allison Crane, Ethan
Miles Crane, Luke Edward Roush, Jacob Ryan Hanna-Weir, Meredith Renee Hanna,
and Rowan Fant Jones; as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will
receive friends Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 1:00-1:45pm in the Mooneyham
Room, Trinity United Methodist Church. A celebration of Dr. Hanna’s life
will be Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 2:00pm, at Trinity United Methodist
Church, conducted by Reverend Dr. Stephen Holler. A private committal will
be held at Trinity Church Columbarium with masonic rites. The family will be
at the home, 4 Woodburn Ridge Road, Spartanburg, SC 29302. In remembrance of
Dr. Hanna, memorials may be made to Dr. Charles and Lenay Hanna Endorsed
