Charles Allen Shaw Jr., 86, of Duluth, Ga., founder and co-owner of Excelso
Coffee And Tea Co., Atlanta Coffee Time and Atlanta Vending Co., died
Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Ga. He
was born in Philadelphia, Penn., on Jan. 15, 1926, the son of Charles Allen
Shaw Sr. and Elsie Shaw, who were killed in 1962 in the Orly Airport plane
crash that claimed the lives of 122 members of the Atlanta arts community.
Shaw moved to Atlanta when he was 5 years old and graduated from Boys High
School. He attended The Citadel for a year before leaving to serve in the
U.S. Air Force as a tail gunner during World War II. After the war, he
returned and graduated from The Citadel. He was a builder and worked in the
real estate industry for many years before going into the coffee business in
1977. He started Excelso with partner Geoff Paul, his three sons and
daughter. Along the way, they started Atlanta Coffee Time, an office coffee
service company, and Atlanta Vending. Shaw was devoted to his business. He
retired 10 years ago but continued to go to work every day until this past
Thanksgiving. He and his wife Artye Shaw were active members of Druid Hills
Country Club and Clairmont Hills Baptist Church in Decatur. He was preceded
in death by his spouse of 50 years, Artye Shaw, and a son, Joey Shaw.
Survivors include: Susan Shaw White and Dannie White, of Duluth, Ga.;
Charles Allen Shaw III and Aloyce Shaw, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; Barton Reid
Shaw and Susan Shaw, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Sue Shaw of Duluth, Ga.;
grandchildren, Patrick and Karen Shaw, Brian and Shirley Shaw, Emily Shaw,
Brandon and Amanda Shaw, Brittany and Jeff Burnett, and Carla Williams;
great-grandchildren, Joey, Lilah and Clara Shaw, Haitt and Sutton Burnett.
Family visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday night, with a eulogy
during a memorial service at 7 p.m. at A. S.Turner and Sons Funeral Home and
Crematory.
