Cecil J. Bowling, Jr., ’41
Cecil James Bowling Jr., 92, died Saturday afternoon (Dec. 29, 2012) at
Baptist Village Retirement Communities after an extended illness. He was a
native of Mobile, Ala. who lived most of his life in Waycross. He attended
Lehigh University and The Citadel. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers during World War II and retired from CSX Railroad (formerly
Atlantic Coastline Railroad) as a trainmaster. He was a member of First
United Methodist Church, served on the Waycross YMCA board of directors, and
was a former member of Waycross Lions Club and American Camellia Society. He
was the son of the late Dr. Cecil James Bowling and Vivian Gray Bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Gorham Bowling, of Waycross; two
daughters, Martha Bowling Vanzant (husband Chris), of Jacksonville, Fla.,
and Anne Bowling Crowley (husband Brian), of Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister,
Betty Bowling McGowen, of Birmingham, Ala.; three grandchildren, Patrick
James Crowley and Kathryn Gorham Crowley, both of Fort Myers, Fla., and
Leigh Anne Vanzant, of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nephews, Robert B. Fowler, of
Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Dr. Edward H. Stevens, of Troy, Ala.; and two nieces,
Florence S. Dodge and Salley S.DeMetz, both of Birmingham, Ala.. A funeral
will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church. Entombment
will follow in Greenlawn Mausoleum. The family will receive friends the hour
prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 410 Williams
St., Waycross, Ga. 31501, or Childers Family YMCA, 1634 Plant Ave.,
Waycross, Ga. 31501.
