William S. (Sig) Smith, ’57

Dr. William Siegfried “Sig” Smith, Jr., 77, of Greensboro, NC, passed away
Monday, December 3, 2012 surrounded by his family at Cone Hospital.
Sig was born December 11, 1934 in Henderson, NC to William Siegfried Smith
and Elizabeth Permar Smith. Prior to graduating from Madison High School in
1953, he earned his Eagle Scout. He graduated from the Citadel in 1957 and
from Duke University Medical School in 1961. Prior to joining a private
practice in Greensboro, he served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps.
On December 22nd, 1957, he married Jo Ann Wilson in Hazlehurst, Georgia. He
practiced medicine in Greensboro, NC from 1967 until 2002. Upon retirement,
his hobbies of farming and woodworking became his new passions. Sig is
survived by his wife, Jo Ann; his son, William Siegfried “Chip” Smith, lll;
his wife, Ellen; their two sons, Will and Jake; his daughter, Elizabeth
Smith Ryan; her husband, Rocky; their children, Jack, Lee, and Connor, and
his brother, Samuel Smith of Jamestown, NC. He was preceded in death by his
daughter Sieglinda Lee Smith. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m.,
Thursday, December 6 at First Presbyterian Church, 617 North Elm Street,
Greensboro, NC. The Reverend David Partington will be officiating. There
will be a visitation in the Virginia Gilmer Room immediately following the
service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Urban Ministries, The
