Death of Wilmer L. Moore ‘51

Wilmer Lewis Duckie Moore passed from this world into the gates of
Heaven on May 6, 2008. He was born on December 20, 1928 in Olanta, S.C.
He was the son of the late Rue Ingram Moore and Wilma Lewis Moore. Mr.
Moore graduated from the Citadel in 1951. He was a Korean War veteran
and a member of the American Legion #85. In 1955, he returned home to
assist his father in running the family Texaco service station. In 1968,
he was employed by the United States Postal Service as a dedicated Rural
Mail Carrier. Mr. Moore was a lifelong member of Nazareth United
Methodist Church in Olanta, which he fully supported with his presence
and frequently encouraged others to join him there. His hobbies were too
many to mention, but his passion was fishing. He was a gifted
storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor; a humble man who freely
gave of himself and helped countless people during his lifetime, quietly
and generously. Those who were blessed to share his life were Miriam
Brown Moore, his beloved wife of 53 years, his daughter, Mitzi Gayle
Moore, his son, Robin Marion Moore, his daughter-in-law, Jessica Wheeler
Moore, his grandson, Reynolds Marion Moore, his granddaughter, Lindsey
Moore Godwin and her husband, Dexter Evans Godwin Jr., and his namesake,
Tyson Lewis Godwin, his precious great-grandson. His many blessings also
included his brothers and sisters; Zilphia (Raymond) Gibbons, Alvida
(James) Evans, Houston (Joyce) Moore, Randolph (Jenny) Moore, and Tom
(Peggy) Moore, and the late Reverend Cannon Rue I Moore Jr.. His life
was also illuminated by 7 nieces, 10 nephews, 12 great-nieces, 17
great-nephews, and many, many true friends on earth and in heaven. The
family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the employees of
the McLeod Hospice House in Florence for their compassion during his
last several hours. Because Duckie loved the casual setting of home,
with family and friends close-by, the celebration of his life will
exemplify this casual style he enjoyed. The celebration will be held at
Thomas Cemetary in Olanta at 2:00 PM on May 9th, directed by Floyd
Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at their home from
5:00-8:00 PM on May 8th. Memorials may be made to Nazareth United
Methodist Church, P.O. Box 368, Olanta, SC, 29114, or to the charity of
your choice.
