Death of Richard C. Thomson, ‘45

Richard Clough “Dick” Thomson, 86, of Inman, went home to be with the
Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare
System after a short illness. He was the widower of the late Margaret
Moser “Tosie” Thomson and the son of the late William Clough Thomson and
Mary Faulkner Thomson of Gaffney. Born and raised in Gaffney, Dick
graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN in June of 1941
and started college at The Citadel in Charleston that fall. After
completing his sophomore year, he joined most of his classmates and
volunteered for the Army and after boot camp in Georgia and New York
State was immediately shipped off to Europe in the middle of World War
II. He was wounded in France and sent back to the states to the VA
hospital in Richmond, VA for several months as they tried to save his
lower right leg and foot. He was awarded the Purple Heart and came home
to Gaffney a war hero. Later he met Tosie and they were married on June
20, 1948. Dick worked for Milliken in both Gaffney and Union. While his
children were still young, he decided to go back to school at the
University of South Carolina in Columbia, where he commuted on the
weekends and where he graduated with a BSBA in accounting in May of
1959. He worked a couple of years with Cline and Elmore, CPA’s and then
became the accountant and office manager for Hamrick and Musgrove Mills
for over 35 years in their Gaffney main office. He served as deacon,
elder and treasurer for many years at Limestone Presbyterian Church and
then as elder and treasurer at Overbrook Presbyterian Church up until
two years ago when he moved in with his son and daughter-in-law in
Inman. Dick was a true southern gentleman, who had the spiritual gift of
encouragement. He was also a very humble man who always thought of
others before himself. He will truly be missed by his many family
members and friends. Surviving are his son, W. Harlan Thomson and his
wife Sandy of Inman; two grandsons, James Harlan Thomson of Smithfield,
NC and William Shannon Thomson of Charleston; and two sisters-in-law,
Cacky Pearson Moser of Gastonia, NC and Patricia Messer Moser of
Asheville, NC. Mr. Thomson was preceded in death by his daughter,
Margaret Elizabeth “Betsy” Thomson; one brother, William Park Thomson;
and three sisters, Mary Ellen Thomson, Willie Thomson Brown, and
Margaret Thomson Carr. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM
until 4:00 PM on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at Overbrook Presbyterian
Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 4:00 PM at the
church with Rev. David Weber and Rev. D.J. Horton officiating. Interment
will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may

Death of Barbara C. Schwab, CGC ‘80

Barbara Carney Schwab, 75, resident of Mt. Pleasant, died on January 28,
2010. Mrs. Schwab was born February 25, 1934 in Manhattan, New York,
daughter of the late John Carney and Rose Flynn Carney. Barbara received
her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the College of Charleston and
her Master’s degree in Education from the Citadel. She taught as a
special education teacher for 25 years in the Charleston County School
District. After her retirement, she volunteered as a Guardian Ad Litem,
a foster child advocate. She was a woman of many interests and had
numerous friends. Never bashful, she made many friends from all walks of
life. Her interests included politics. Although in her later years she
favored the Republican Party, she served as a Democratic National
Delegate in the Clinton Presidency. After her retirement, she traveled
all over Europe as well as exotic countries including Greece, Turkey,
Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. She also loved to spend
winters in Thailand where she volunteered as a teacher at an English
speaking orphanage. She was in Thailand when the Tsunami hit after
Christmas in 2004. Barbara is survived by her son and daughter-in-law,
Gary and Lea Schwab of Mt. Pleasant and 4 grandchildren: Katherine
MacMillan Schwab, Gary “William” Schwab Jr., David “Paxton” Schwab, and
Michael Flynn Schwab. Three sisters: Joan, Claire and Kathleen, and many
nieces and nephews. The relatives and friends of Barbara Schwab are
invited to attend her memorial service Wednesday, February 3, 2010 in
the J. HENRY STUHR, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 4 pm. The family will
receive friends from 2 pm until time of service. In accordance with her
specific request, a wake will be held at the home of Gary and Lea Schwab
at 283 Bampfield Drive in Old Hobcaw following the memorial service. In

Death of Richard H. Lukstat, Sr., ‘57

Richard Henry “Dick” Lukstat, Sr., 73, of Bumpass, Va., died Monday,
January 4, 2010 at his home. Survivors include his loving wife of 53
years, Jennie Lukstat; son, Richard H. Lukstat, Jr. and his wife, Wendy,
of Clifton, VA; daughter, B Lukstat Simpson and her husband, John of
Manassas, VA; three grandchildren, Jennie Simpson, Kristin Lukstat, John
Richard “Jake” Simpson. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m.
Friday, January 8 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial
will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the
service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mary Washington

by all of his family, friends and anyone who was lucky enough to have
met him.

Death of Frank P. Anto, ‘45

Frank P. Anto passed away on June 29, 2009, after a short illness. Frank
Pierre Anto, formerly of West Newton, died June 29, 2009, in Vero Beach,
Fla. Born in Charleroi, Frank attended McKeesport High School, and went
on to graduate from The Citadel and Dickinson College. He served as a
1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Force during World War II, and flew
bombing missions as a navigator based in England. After the war ended,
he graduated from Dickinson Law School and practiced law in West Newton
for over 40 years. He was a member of the Westmoreland Bar Association
and was a life member of the VFW. He retired from the practice of law in
1993, and he and his wife moved to Cape May Point, N.J., where he served
as chairman of the Zoning Board. He enjoyed walking, traveling, playing
bridge, and playing the piano. He moved to Vero Beach in 2007. He is
survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy; his sister, Rachael, in
Wynnewood, N.J.; two sons, David, in Ligonier, Pa., and Richard, in
Lorton, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Death of Donald E. Padgett, ‘50

Donald E. Padgett, 79, of Denton, passed away Wednesday, January 20,
2010 at Presbyterian of Dallas. He was born April 13, 1930 to Eugene H.
Padgett and Mary Ellen Wilson in Smoaks, South Carolina. He married
Deanna C. Sarby in Sierra Blanca, TX in 1963. He was employed at White
Sands Missile Range in New Mexico as a Missile Engineer before retiring
in 1986. Donald graduated from Smoaks High School and The Citadel in
Electrical Engineering in 1950. He was a soldier in the Korean War and
served as an Electronics Engineer at Ft. Bliss, TX. He volunteered for
24 years in tax assistance programs such as VITA and AARP in El Paso,
TX, Denton, TX, and Edmond, OK. Friends and family are invited to attend
a Celebration of the Life of Donald Padgett, Sunday, January 24 from 2-4
pm, at the Best Western Inn, 2910 W. University Dr., Denton, TX. Please

Death of R. Mark Stading, ‘99

Ronald Mark Stading, of Johns Island, entered into eternal rest on the morning of January 25, 2010, Ronald Mark Stading, husband of Meredith Goode Stading. Residence, Johns Island, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Stading are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Thursday January 28, 2010 at ten o’clock in The Summerall Chapel, The Citadel. Mark was born December 16, 1976 in Charlotte, NC, the son of Ronald Lee Stading and Randy McCall Stading. He was a 1999 graduate of The Citadel and a member of The Citadel Alumni Association and the Stray Dog Society. He was a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch. Mark loved being outside, whether it be fishing, crabbing or throwing the ball with his “girls”. He always had a smile on his face. He adored baseball season whether watching his Cubs, at The Citadel or the Gamecocks. When baseball season ended he turned his full attention to the Carolina Panthers. Mark deeply loved animals. He couldn’t drive by a stray dog without stopping. He is survived by his wife of Johns Island, SC; his son: Brooklyn Ronald Stading; his parents of Charlotte, NC; two brothers: Michael J. Death of James C. Hare, Sr., ‘36

James Cuthbert (JC) Hare, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on
the morning of January 24, 2010. James Cuthbert “J.C.” Hare, husband of
Constance “Connie” Davis Hare. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives
and friends of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Hare are invited to attend the funeral
services of the former, Wednesday, at eleven-thirty o’clock, in St.
Michael’s Episcopal Church. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC.,
DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Tuesday from four until six o’clock. J.C. was born
November 18, 1914, in Pinopolis, SC, the son of James Cuthbert Hare and
Joanna Eunice Bolan Hare. He graduated from the Citadel in 1936, the
South Carolina School of Law, and after spending a short stint in the
U.S. Army he joined the FBI where he and Connie served their country in
World War II. After the war he and Allen Legare formed the law firm of
Legare and Hare and later added Gaines W. Smith. He served as Assistant
Solicitor and Solicitor in Charleston County. He was Chairman of the
Charleston County Democratic Committee during Mendel Rivers’ tenure and
was a member of the Electoral College that elected President John F.
Kennedy. He was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, an Honorary
Life member of the Hibernian Society, the Carolina Yacht Club, the
Country Club of Charleston, a past Exalted Ruler of the Charleston Elks
Lodge #242, and the SC Elks State Association, the Solomon Lodge #1
A.F.M., and the Sertoma Club of Charleston. He is survived by his wife
of Charleston, SC; one daughter: Danelle H. Warner (Charles) of Rome,
GA; two sons: James C. Hare, Jr., (Marja) and Cantey D. Hare, all of
Charleston, SC; eight grandchildren: Elizabeth, Chad, Justin, Arden,
David, Ray, John and Brian; five great grandchildren; one sister:

Death of Donald B. Armstrong, Jr., ‘73

Donald Beverly Armstrong, Jr. of Mason, Ohio, passed away suddenly
Thursday, November 26, 2009. He was preceded in death by: his parents,
Donald B. and Lucille Armstrong; Mr. Armstrong was a devoted husband of
Karen Pryor Armstrong; cherished father of Russell Moore Armstrong and
Donald Reid Armstrong; and loving brother of Karin (Sambo) Harper and
Sheila (Jimmy) Hutto; doting uncle of Stephen Harper, Phillip Harper,
Megan Hutto, Myles Hutto, Connor Hutto and Lucy Hutto; and dear great
uncle of Carlynn Harper, Hollis Harper, Sloan Harper, Caleb Harper, Emma
Harper and Benjamin Harper. He was a tremendous friend of many and a
proud 1973 graduate of The Citadel and served his country proudly as a
captain in the Unites States Army Reserve. Donnie was a well respected
colleague at International Paper for 37 years. He loved being around
water either fishing or sailing. He loved his family dearly and was a
supreme handyman and known as “Mr. Fixit” by many people. His family
received friends at Shorten & Ryan Funeral Home in Mason, Ohio on
Tuesday, December 1, 2009, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services
will be 2 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 2009, at St. Paul’s Waccamaw United
Methodist Church at Pawleys Island, S.C. His family will receive friends
at the church prior to the service from 12 noon until 2 p.m. The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Death of H. Ray Everett, ‘49

Hobart Ray Everett, Sr., 87, of Mount Pleasant, SC, died January 15,
2010. He was born March 24, 1922, in Crowder, Mississippi, the son of
Lawrence and Ruby Elnora Wann Everett. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps
for the duration of WWII, with his last posting in Charleston. For a
number of years he served in the Air Force Reserve. After the war, he
graduated from the Citadel, Charleston, and then finished studies for a
graduate degree at the Wharton School of Finance, Philadelphia. For many
years he was Chief Accountant in the Financial Office at Roper Hospital,
Charleston. He became Director of Fiscal Affairs for St. Francis Xavier
Hospital in 1963, retiring after 23 years. He served on the board of the
American Association of Hospital Accountants, starting the South
Carolina Chapter in 1954. After retirement, he made a name for himself
as a landscape photographer. On October 4, 1946, he married Ruth Holmes
Humphreys of Charleston, SC, who predeceased him. They lived in Mount
Pleasant and were members first of St. Andrews and then of Christ Church
Episcopal. In September 2008, he married Dessie Connell of Mount
Pleasant. He is survived by: a daughter, Dr. Ruth Holmes Whitehead of
Halifax, Nova Scotia; two sons, Commander H. R. (Bart) Everett, USN
(Ret.), San Diego, CA; and Reverend Wade Humphreys Everett,
Timmonsville, SC; a daughter-in-law, Rev. Ann Dease Everett; three
grandsons, Todd Ashley, Timothy Andrew and David Benjamin Everett; two
granddaughters-in-law: Elise and Katrina Everett; two granddaughters:
Sarah Robin Holmes Whitehead and Rebecca Nicole Everett Stebbins; two
grandsons-in-law: Ryerson Christie and Jeff Stebbins; a great-grandson,
Seann Everett; and four great-granddaughters, Savannah, Rochelle, and
Allison Ruth Everett, and Nathalie Kathleen Stebbins; and his sister,
Launa Fay Everett Hickey De Sale. He was predeceased by another sister,
Fern Everett Luker, and by two brothers, Lawrence and Melvin Eugene
Everett. Visitation with family and friends 2 p.m. – 3 p.m., Wednesday,
January 20, 2010, at Christ Episcopal Church, 2304 Highway 17N, Mt.

Death of R. Read Tull, ‘51

Rhesa Read Tull, age 82, of Charlotte, died peacefully at his home on
Friday January 8, 2010. He was born on May 22, 1927 in Asheville, North
Carolina, the son of Margaret Melanie Hawkins Tull and Charles Watson
Tull. Mr. Tull is preceded in death by his sister Frances Tull Phillips,
of Atlanta. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Sarah Shambaugh Tull,
his brother Charles Watson Tull of Charlotte, and his three children
Margaret Tull Davis of Atlanta, Dorothy Tull Mothershead of Charlotte,
and Rhesa Read Tull, Jr. and wife Elisabeth of Waxhaw, North Carolina.
Other survivors include his six grandchildren, Julia Wilborn Davis, and
Margaret Wilborn Davis of Atlanta, Charles Ivan Mothershead IV and
Parker Tull Mothershead of Charlotte, and Rhesa Read Tull III and
Torrance Spencer Tull of Waxhaw, North Carolina, and numerous nieces and
nephews. Mr. Tull graduated in 1945 from the Georgia Military Academy
and then served during WWII in the Second Infantry (Indianhead) Division
of the U.S. Army. Later he graduated from the Citadel in 1951 with a
degree in Business Administration. Mr. Tull then moved to Charlotte to
work with Southern Bell. He acquired a strong interest in real estate
and started his own company as a residential contractor of custom built
homes. Later he became a developer of commercial properties. A licensed
insurance agent as well as Real Estate Broker, Mr. Tull was a partner of
the Purnell-Tull Agency. He was a lifelong member of the Charlotte Real
Estate Board and the Homebuilders Association of which he was elected
President in 1961. Mr. Tull served on the Board of Trustees of Charlotte
Country Day School for ten years where he was instrumental in planning
the original Country Day School Carmel Road campus. His civic
involvement also included starting the early Boy Scout Troop #17 at
Christ Episcopal Church where he served as the Scout Master. During the
establishment of St. John’s Episcopal Church on Carmel Road, Mr. Tull
was Chairman of the Building Committee and was on the original vestry.
He was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served as a
senior usher for many years. He was also a member of the Charlotte
Country Club and the Charlotte City Club. Mr. Tull was a passionate
outdoorsman. In his youth he enjoyed hiking parts of the southern
Appalachian Trail and later he liked hiking in Maine and Switzerland. He
loved nature and wildlife, hunting, and fishing. An accomplished
athlete, he was an avid tennis player and looked forward to skiing each
winter in Colorado and Europe. He took great pleasure traveling the
world with his wife Sarah. Mr. Tull was strongly patriotic and keenly
interested in visiting WWII battle sites. He was a thorough gentleman
with excellent judgment and enduring optimism. He was blessed with an
engaging sense of humor, a youthful enthusiasm, and a strong, abiding
faith. Members of the family would like to express their gratitude to
all the caregivers who attended Mr. Tull at his home, with a special
appreciation to Hannah Obi. The family will receive friends on Tuesday
evening, January 12th from 5 until 7 p.m. at 1201 Scotland Avenue. A
memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Wednesday,
January 13th at 11 a.m. with a reception following the service in the
Blue Room. Graveside burial will be private in Asheville, NC. In lieu of
flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions be made to Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 633 Third Avenue, NYC 10017; Appalachian
Trail Conservancy, 799 Washington Street, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425; or
Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207. Harry
