Death of Victoria N.K. Steele, CGC ‘80

Victoria Nan Kitchen Steele January 16, 1928 – March 5, 2010 COLUMBUS,
GA – Victoria Nan Kitchen Steele was born January 16, 1928 and died on
March 5, 2010. Faithful daughter, loving wife and mother, she lived as
peacefully as she died, at the age of 82. Victoria was born in Des
Moines, Iowa, the eldest of three children. After receiving her
Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Drake University in 1948, she went
on to meet Warren and raise seven children. Victoria received her
Master’s degree from the Citadel in South Carolina. Her passions were
teaching and caring for the mentally handicapped and undeserved
individuals. She spent several years in the classroom, while providing a
loving home for her family. After moving back to Columbus, GA in 1980
with Warren, to be closer to her aging parents, she worked tirelessly in
the Columbus school system, focusing on special education classes at
Kendrick High School, implementing and improving programs for mentally
handicapped individuals to have the ability to transition to independent
living at West Central Georgia Regional Hospital. Victoria was a proud
member of Links, Incorporated and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was a
Docent of the Columbus Museum, and active at St. Mary’s Rd. United
Methodist Church where she served with the Vacation Bible School, the
Altar Guild, served as chair of the Worship Committee, and President of
the United Methodist Women. She leaves to mourn, her devoted husband,
Warren Steele; one sister, Joy Ward Drew of Illinois; seven children,
Holly (Howard) Burns of Maryland, Woody (Trini) Woolery of Michigan,
William (Nancy) Steele of Indiana, Audrey Brown of Texas, Theresa Page
of Florida, Warren II (Lorie) Steele and Frank (Trina) Steele, both of
Columbus, GA; 17 grandchildren; two great grandchildren, and loving
caretaker Corissa James. A memorial service will be held at their
church, St. Mary’s Road United Methodist Church, 3993 St. Mary’s Rd.,
Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 1 p.m., with repast immediately following in
the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to Columbus Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association , in Victoria’s
memory. A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more

Death of David I. Epstein, ‘43

On March 2, 2010, we lost a loving father, grandfather, and husband in a
car accident. Dr. David I. Epstein was born in Greene, New York on July
14,1922. He studied at the Citadel and Tufts Dental then met his first
wife, Elise Olson. After two years in Ware, Mass., the Navy sent him to
San Diego. They had three children together. David and Elise divorced
after 27 years of marriage and he later married Regina Jesverger. They
were married for 21 years until she passed away in 2004. He is survived
by his third wife Gladys Wachot. His passion was fishing. His sense of
humor and kind heart will be missed. He is survived by his three
children Mark, Marcia, and Marlene, step-daughter, Toni Ann, and ten
grandchildren. Services will be held Monday, March 8th, at Greenwood
Mortuary at 10:00 a.m.

Death of Leo B. Simmons, Jr., ‘66

Dr. Leo Benjamin Simmons, Jr., 65, was born in Wilmington, N.C. lived in
Kennett Square, PA and was raised in Williston. Dr. Simmons died
Saturday, March 6, 2010. Dr. Simmons was a military officer (CAPT,
USN-ret) and general surgeon for more than 35 years. He graduated from
The Citadel, received his medical degree from the Medical University of
South Carolina and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He
held clinical and teaching posts both stateside and overseas, and served
aboard numerous naval vessels. Dr. Simmons earned several military
awards during his career including the Meritorious Service Medal and two
Navy Commendation Medals. Upon retirement from the Navy, he served as
staff surgeon at the VA Medical Center, Wilmington, Delaware. Survivors
include his beloved wife, Dr. Susan Johnston Simmons, PhD; children, Leo
B., III and Elizabeth; parents, Leo B Simmons, Sr. and Iris Brunjes
Simmons; sister, Dr. Rebecca Weatherby, PhD and three grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Behrens. Funeral Mass will
be held 12:00 Noon Wednesday, March 10 at the VA Medical Center Chapel,
1601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805, where friends may Call
after 10:00 a.m. Graveside services with full military honors accorded

Death of Kenneth L. Toombs, ‘46

Kenneth L. Toombs, 86, of Monkton, VT., passed away at his home on
Monday, March 1, 2010. Ken was born in Sheepshead Bay, N.Y. on Feb. 7,
1924. In 1942, he enlisted in the US Army while attending The Citadel.
He was seriously injured in combat on Nov. 18, 1944 in Germany while a
member of the 102nd Infantry Division. In 1946, he married Marjorie
Post, his wife of 63 years. Together they raised four daughters in
Massapequa, N.Y. Ken owned the Charles E. Krohn Insurance Agency in
Massapequa for 40 years before retiring to Vermont in 1989. Ken’s memory
is cherished by his wife, Marjorie P. Toombs and his three daughters:
Leslie and James Bell of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Patricia and Alan Cole
of Westmore, Vt., and Joanne and Fred Doucette of Monkton, Vt. and his
brother-in-law, W. Deane Post of Massapequa, N.Y. He also leaves 12
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his
oldest daughter, Nancy Parke Vessalico, in 2006, his brother Girard S.
Toombs and most recently his sister, Viola Lottman-Radzow. He enjoyed
spending his summers in Island Pond, Vt., his winter vacations in
Nassau, Bahamas, his Morgan horses, his two favorite dogs: Zack and
Matlock, motorcycles and mowing his lawn! The family would like to give
a heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Theodore J. Fink of Shelburne, and to
Becky, Tim and Connie of Addison County Home Health and Hospice for all
their care and guidance during Ken’s illness. We would like to welcome
friends and family to the Toombs residence on Saturday, March 6, 2010

Death of John P. Zervos, ‘80

John Peter Zervos, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on the
evening of March 3, 2010, John Peter Zervos, husband of Linda Laney
Zervos. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and
Mrs. John Peter Zervos are invited to attend the funeral services of the
former, Sunday, March 7, 2010 at two o’clock in St. Philip’s Church.
Interment, private. Friends may call at Stuhr’s Downtown Chapel Saturday
between five and seven o’clock. Mr. Zervos was born July 6, 1957 in
Moultrie, GA, the son of Peter W. Zervos and Mary Gelegotis Zervos. He
was a 1980 graduate of The Citadel. He was a Real Estate Developer and a
prominent philanthropist in Charleston. He developed shopping center
properties to serve residents of upper Meeting Street in mid-town
Charleston. Mr. Zervos was a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and
the Carolina Yacht Club, where he served as Fleet Captain and
Boatmaster. He is survived by his wife of Charleston, SC; parents of
Charleston, SC; one son: Peter William Zervos, II of Charleston, SC; one
daughter: Carolyn Laney Zervos of Charleston, SC two sisters: Kathy
Zervos Dominey and her husband Roger of Jacksonville, FL and Elizabeth
Zervos Mann and her husband Chris of Charleston, SC; one brother:

Death of Charles M. Lindsay III, ‘67

Charles Matthews (Dutch) Lindsay III, of Columbia. A memorial service
for Charles Matthews “Dutch” Lindsay III will be held 11 a.m. Monday,
March 8, 2010, in the Summerall Chapel at The Citadel. DUNBAR FUNERAL
HOME, DEVINE STREET CHAPEL, is in charge. Mr. Lindsay died March 3,
2010. Born September 18, 1944, in Meridian, Miss., Dutch was the son of
the late Charles Matthews Lindsay Jr. and Jane Adams Lindsay. He spent
his childhood in Gainesville, Ga., and was a graduate of The Citadel,
Class of 1967. He worked for the Russell Corporation of Alexander City,
Ala., for 27 years and was an active member of Saint James Episcopal
Church. Dutch enjoyed sports, especially Citadel football, and was a
lifelong train enthusiast. Surviving are his wife, Sallie Dickson
Lindsay; daughter, Jane Dickson Lindsay, both of Columbia; son, Charles
Matthews Lindsay IV (Christina); grandson, James Henry Lindsay, all of

Death of Cheatham E. Hodges, Jr., ‘50

Cheatham E. Hodges, Jr. 84, died on Saturday, Feb. 27th. Born in
Savannah, GA Sept. 23, 1925 son of Marie Smith Hodges and Cheatham E.
Hodges Sr. He served in WWII as a Pharmacist Mate 1st Class at Brooklyn
Naval Hospital. He served on the USS Panamint AGC 13 in the Pacific.
Honorably discharged June 26, 1946. Graduated from the Citadel in 1950
with an AB degree in Political Science. He received a Masters of
Education from U of F and studied for a PhD in emotional disturbance and
social maladjustment. He had many careers: an instructor at Millersville
State College, real estate and appraisal in Augusta, GA, a field
expediter for DuPont, taught for Palm Beach County public schools,
business management in Augusta, executive director of the GA Catholic
Conference for 25 years and also represented GA Military College and
several other entities to the GA Legislature. He was a Knight of St.
Gregory, a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre and a Knight of Columbus. He is
survived by his wife, Joan Weiller Hodges; children Mary West, Ann
Rountree, Teresa Dean, Julia Miller, Clare Bennett, Joseph Hodges, Peter
Hodges, and Paul Hodges; 17 grandchildren; and his brother Walter

Death of James Balloch, Jr., ‘47

James Balloch, Jr., 83, of Mauldin, passed away on Friday, February 26,
2010. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the son of the late James
Balloch, Sr. and Sarah Cathcart Balloch. He attended The Citadel
University and served in the United States Marines during World War II
and later graduated from Clemson University. James was a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Wade Hampton Kiwanis,
member of the Greenville Elks Club, the Cooper Masonic Lodge of
Travelers Rest, the AATCC Chemist Assn. and retired from Multi-Chem Corp
as a Sales Rep. He is survived by his wife, Vera H. Balloch of Mauldin,
and a son, James Balloch, III of Knoxville, Tenn.; a cousin, Jack
Balloch of Philadelphia, Pa., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral
service will be Monday, March 1, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of
Woodlawn Funeral Home with entombment to follow in Woodlawn Memorial
Park. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1 until 2 p.m. in the
funeral home.

Death of William J. Goree, ‘49

Lt. Col William Joseph (Bill) Goree, USAF, Ret., 86, of Summerville, husband of Elizabeth H. “Betty” Goree died Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Summerville Medical Center. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 11 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 6 until 8 o’clock Tuesday evening. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memory Gardens, Summerville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to: American Heart Association , 409 King Street, Suite 300, Charleston, SC 29403. Bill was born December 19, 1923 in Birmingham, Alabama, son of the late Joseph James Goree and Jennie Louise Manly Goree. After graduating from North Charleston High School, he served an apprenticeship as a shipfitter at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He left there to serve in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was a second lieutenant when the war ended. After the war, he attended the Citadel and graduated in 1949. He was recalled to duty and served our country for thirty one years in the Air Force attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was with the Strategic Air Command and served as a pilot, chief of conventional bomb testing, and chief of test evaluation among others. He was sent to Vietnam where he flew 143 combat missions and served as Airfield manager at Phan Rang and Da Nang. He retired in 1972. He was the Head of Engineering at Trident Regional Medical for its first eighteen years and retired in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, was a great handyman and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are: 2 daughters and 1 son: Patricia ”Pat” A. Goree of Atlanta, GA, William “Joe” J. Goree, Jr. of Summerville, Cheryl G. Lisk and her husband Jennings (Brad) B. Lisk, Jr. of Summerville, 3 grandchildren: Jennings “Jenks” Lisk, III, Haley E. Lisk and Katharine “Katie” Lisk all of Summerville and several nieces and nephews. Death of Arnold H. Hurd, Jr., ‘43

Maj. Arnold H. (Pruney) Hurd, Jr., USA, Ret., 91, of Savannah, Ga., died
Feb. 23, 2010, at Azalealand Nursing Home. He was born June 16, 1918, in
Pulaski, Virginia, and had been a resident of Savannah for more than 60
years. Arnold, or “Pruney” as he was known by everyone, was a graduate
of the Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, and was a
veteran of World War II serving in Europe and Korea. He received
numerous awards for his service prior to retirement in 1963 including
the Purple Heart. He served as a Military Instructor in the Savannah
High School R.O.T.C. unit during his active duty in the late 1940’s. He
has been active in community affairs having served as President of the
Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame; Captain of the Savannah
Quarterback Club; volunteer with Benedictine (where he received the
Benedictine Medal of Excellence); and membership in national and local
military organizations. Arnold is survived by his wife of 62 years,
Virginia Yancey Hurd of Savannah; one son , Arnold H. Hurd, III and wife
Carol of Marietta, GA; one grandson, Richard S. Hurd of Memphis, TN. He
was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Hurd Gordon. A Graveside
Service will be conducted by Dr. B. Earl Best, at 11:00 a.m., Friday,
February 26, 2010, in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery with
