Death of Robert C. Smith, CGC ’80

Robert (Bob) C. Smith, 61, of Summerville, SC, died Sunday, August 29,
2010, at Trident Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Tuesday
afternoon, August 31, 2010, at 3 o’clock at Parks Funeral Home Chapel
and burial will follow at Rudd Branch Cemetery. Friends and family may
call at Parks Funeral Home Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

in Moncks Corner, SC, Bob was the son of the late Casper Smith and Lena
Harvey Smith. He is a graduate of Berkeley High School and he received
his Bachelors Degree from USC and his Masters Degree from The Citadel.
Bob had a passion for teaching his favorite languages, Latin and French,
which was instilled in him by Mrs. Elizabeth C. Kennedy, his high school
Latin teacher. Bob is a retired professor at the College of Charleston
and retired teacher from Dorchester, Charleston, and Orangeburg County
schools. Bob was also a member of the Sons of the Confederacy. He was a
loving brother and friend. Surviving are two sisters, Carolyn Smith
Knight and Frances Smith Sweat, both of Summerville; two nephews, Joel
D. Sweat of Summerville and Ronald Lee Clontz, Jr. of Decatur, GA; and a
niece, Ashley E. Knight of Goose Creek, SC. Arrangements by PARKS

Death of Edward L. Oliver III, ’66

Lt. Col. Edward Lee “Ollie” Oliver SUMMERVILLE – Lt. Col. Edward Lee ”Ollie” Oliver, 66, husband of June Von Glahn Oliver, of Summerville, SC, died Friday, August 27, 2010. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, August 30, 2010, at the Summerall Chapel at the Citadel at 3 o’clock. Burial will be at a later date. Ollie Oliver was born June 20, 1944, in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Edward E. Oliver, Jr. and Antoinette Gall Oliver. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the Citadel and his Master’s degree from Clemson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam. His military honors included the Legion of Merit decoration, Bronze Star Medals, and the Purple Heart. LT. COL. Oliver was a member of Life Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Death of Cadwallader Jones, ’42

Cadwallader “Quaddy” Jones, 88, of Sullivan’s Island, entered into eternal rest on the evening of August 25, 2010. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Cadwallader Jones are invited to attend the funeral services for “Quaddy” on Monday, August 30, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., in The Summerall Chapel, The Citadel. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Sunday, between 5-7 p.m. Cadwallader Jones was born November 26, 1921, in East Orange, New Jersey, the son of Allen Jones and Helen Iredell Williams Jones. He was a 1942 Civil Engineering graduate of The Citadel where he was a Cadet Company Commander, member of The Summerall Guards, and Captain of the Track Team. Upon graduation he went immediately into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to serve in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Before the war’s end “Quaddy” married his sweetheart Lucy Paul, and following his Army service, he went to work in the family business at Paul Motor Company. In 1967, Mr. Jones founded Jones Ford, Inc., in North Charleston, retiring in 1992. He was also member of the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan. Mr. Jones was an Elder Emeritus at Church Creek Presbyterian Church (PCA) where he was a Sunday school teacher and member of the choir. He was a Past President of theRotary Club of North Charleston, Chairman of the Blood Services Committee of the American Red Cross, Director for the Charleston YMCA, and participant in numerous other community organizations. He was a physical fitness advocate, and an avid jogger, serving on the board that started the Cooper River Bridge Run. He and Lucy are members of the Cooper River Bridge Run Hall of Fame. Cadwallader will also be remembered for the numerous succinct letters he wrote to the editor of the Charleston Post and Courier. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucy Paul Jones; three daughters: Helen Iredell Jones of Lake Lure, NC, Grange Walters (David), and Robin Cooper (Richard) of Charleston; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by an infant son, a grandson Bixby Cooper, a sister, Jane Clarke, and a brother Allen Jones, Jr. The family would like to give special thanks to Taylor Pope, Susannah Johnston, Charlene Crawford and Charnette Pinckney who have helped us all through these last years with their outstanding and tender care. “Quaddy” Jones was a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather, both a diligent businessman and a caring, generous employer, an active church member and community leader. But above all else, he was a man who wanted his life to bring glory and honor to His Lord, and he never tired of thanking God for His goodness and grace in all things. Death of Conrad J. Kornoski, ’58

Conrad Joseph Kornoski, 74, Laureldale, died Aug. 20, 2010, in Reading
Hospital and Medical Center. He was the husband of Elizabeth Louise
(Pellicciotti) Kornoski, whom he married Nov. 25, 1961. Born Feb. 8,
1936, in Glen Lyon, Pa., he was a son of the late Joseph and Celia
(Ladishak) Kornoski. Conrad was a 1954 graduate of Newport Township High
School and a 1958 graduate of The Citadel Military College of South
Carolina. He was employed in purchasing with Western
Electric/AT&T/Lucent for 35 years, retiring in 1995. Conrad was a member
of Holy Guardian Angels RC Church, Hyde Park. He was also a member of
Pioneers, Reading, and enjoyed golfing and Notre Dame football.
Surviving in addition to his wife, is a son, Joseph Conrad Kornoski,
Laureldale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10
a.m. in Holy Guardian Angels RC Church, 3121 Kutztown Road, Hyde Park. A
viewing will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in Walter R. Christ Funeral
Home Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Entombment will be in Chapel
of St. George, Gethsemane Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions

Death of Ripley W. (Westy) Clarkson, ’75

Funeral service for Ripley Westmoreland Clarkson, of Winnsboro, will be
held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at First United Methodist
Church in Winnsboro, South Carolina. A graveside service will follow in
First United Methodist Church Cemetery on East College Street. Mr.
Clarkson was born July 21, 1953, in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the
son of the late Honorable Nathaniel Heyward Clarkson Jr. and Mrs.
Margaret Westmoreland Clarkson. He was a graduate of Hammond School and
a 1975 graduate of The Citadel. After two years of military service in
the Unites States Army, he earned his Juris Doctorate from the
University of South Carolina School of Law. Mr. Clarkson also served in
the J.A.G. Corps in the United States Army Reserve. He was an assistant
attorney general for the State of South Carolina. Surviving are his
wife; Elinor Wylie Clarkson; two sons, Wylie Westmoreland Clarkson and
his wife, Andrea McElveen Clarkson, Blair Childs Clarkson; his mother,
Mrs. Margaret Westmoreland Clarkson of Columbia; a sister, Eugenia
Clarkson Brabham and her husband, Angus McKay Brabham III, of Columbia;
a brother, Nathaniel Heyward Clarkson III and his wife, Helen McKay
Clarkson, of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of

Death of Hugh M. Gill, Jr., ’68

Hugh Millen “Buddy” Gill Jr., 63, of Chester, SC, passed away Friday,
Aug. 20, 2010, at his home. A native of Chester County, Mr. Gill was
born Oct. 17, 1946, son of the late Hugh Millen Gill Sr. and the late
Martha Douglas Gill. He was a sales representative for Humana, a member
of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and was a 1968 graduate of the
Citadel. Surviving are his wife, Robin McGuire Gill; a daughter, Anna
Douglas Gill; three sisters, Polly Guyton of Blythewood, S.C., Angie
Payne of Charlotte, N.C., and Lynn Hatcher of Greenville, S.C. The
family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Union ARP church
in Richburg. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Gill will be held at
2 p.m. Monday at Union ARP Church, with. Dr. J. Allen Derrick and Pastor
Ron Roddey officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove United

Death of Richard C. Cooley, Sr., ’56

Richard C. Cooley, Sr., age 75, of Hockessin, DE, went home to be with
the Lord on August 15, 2010, at the Christiana Hospital surrounded by
his family and friends. After graduating from the Citadel in 1956, he
was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army serving two
years active duty. He continued to serve for the next 19 years in the
Army Reserves retiring as a Colonel. Rick retired from the DuPont
Company as an Occupational Health Consultant. He was a member of
Evangelical Presbyterian Church and the Music Box Society International.
He enjoyed mechanical music machines, traveling with his wife Betty and
spending time with his grandchildren. Rick was preceded in death by his
parents, Brooks and Mallie Cooley. He is survived by his wife of 53
years, Betty King Cooley, his sons, Richard C. Cooley, Jr. and Brooks T.
Cooley, his grandchildren, Nathan, Benjamin and Etsuko, his brothers,
Allan Brooks Cooley, Guy Edwin Cooley and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Thursday, August 19, from 10-11 am, at the
Evangelical Presbyterian Church 308 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711
where a service will begin at 11 am. Burial will be in Hockessin Friends

Death of William S. Morgan, Jr., ’54

Major William S. Morgan Jr., USMC (Ret.), 78, died on Wednesday, Aug.
11, 2010. He was the elder son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Morgan Sr.
Morgan retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974 after serving for more
than 20 years. As naval aviator, he served two tours in Vietnam — his
first tour from 1965 to 1966 as a helicopter pilot and his second tour
from 1968 to 1969 as a fighter pilot. He flew approximately 300 combat
missions, receiving: 20 Air Medals, including an Air Medal with a Gold
Star/Flight Numeral 18; Navy Commendation Medal; National Defense
Service Medal with one star; Vietnam Service Medal with seven stars;
Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star; and the
Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Morgan also received a letter of
appreciation from the Senior Advisor, 2nd Infantry Regiment endorsed by
the Senior Advisor, 1st Infantry Division and Commanding Officer,
HMM-163 for outstanding support on a combat mission he flew as a
helicopter pilot on May 1966 at Gio Linh and Con Thien. He wrote and
published a poem on Gio Linh and Con Thien in 1993, memorializing the
Marines who fought there 27 years earlier. After retiring from the
Marine Corps, he was employed by the Employment Security Commission of
North Carolina for more than 15 years. He retired from the State of
North Carolina in 1977. Born in Spartanburg, S.C. on April 18, 1932, he
graduated from The Citadel in 1954 with an AB degree. He later received
his MEd degree from N.C. State University. A service honoring Morgan’s
life, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Elizabethtown Baptist
Church. Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery. Visitation
will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral
Home in Elizabethtown. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jean
Yandle; two sons, William Stuart III of Columbia, S.C., and David
Collins of Wake Forest; and a daughter, Kim; a brother, John Elford of
Charlotte; two sisters, Maria Elmore of Charlotte, and Nancy Brown of
Fort Myers, Fla.; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the Morgan
family requests that memorials be made to the Christian Activity Center
at Elizabethtown Baptist Church.

Death of Geoffrey T. Street, ’10

Geoffrey Taylor Street, 22, succumbed to injuries, August 6, 2010, following a motorcycle accident in Geoffrey Street CHARLESTON – Geoffrey Taylor Street, 22, succumbed to injuries, August 6, 2010, following a motorcycle accident in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a May, 2010 graduate of the Citadel Military College of South Carolina and received his commission as an officer in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the ROTC program at The Citadel where he was a business major.  He was a 1999 graduate of Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, PA, and a 1995 graduate of Westchester Friends School in Westchester, PA. Geoff’s interests included leadership in a diverse world, chess, world travel and spending time with friends and family. He is survived by his parents, H. Fletcher and Barbara Mattos Street of Coatesville, PA and Falmouth, Mass.; his fiance;e Corey Hutchins of Dallas, Texas and her parents, Richard and Francis Hutchins; his grandmother, Jean VanCampen Mattos; his aunts Ruth Grant, Susan Mattos and Margaret Wheeler; Uncles Jim Mattos and Robert Wheeler; cousins Leah Mattos, Lelia Leary and her husband Jason, Barbara Grant, Emelia Grant and her husband Pablo Zauzich, Clayton Mitchell and his wife Rachelle, and Seth Mattos and his wife Heather along with second cousins Kai, Avery, and Peyton. A memorial service is planned for October 9th at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 11:00 a.m., on 3055 Main St., Barnstable, Mass.
